Charbel Zeaiter January 9, 2024

Learning Objectives

Discover the fundamentals of UX design and gain insight into emerging technologies like AI and Web3. Familiarise yourself with key terms and concepts, understanding how human-centred design can make a positive global impact.

  • Understand the basic principles of UX Design
  • Gain an overview of Artificial Intelligence, Web3, and their relevance in UX Design
  • Learn about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • Familiarise with key terms related to UX Design and emerging technologies

Teaching Materials:

  • Slides for theory sessions
  • Handouts: Glossary of key terms, UN’s SDGs, and a brief on AI and Web3
  • Downloadable Toolkit: Glossary of key terms
  • Practical activities: Worksheets, case studies, and online resources

Morning Session – Theory

  1. Introduction to the course (15 minutes)
  • Welcome the students and provide an overview of the course outline
  • Icebreaker activity
  • Explain the importance of UX Design in today’s digital landscape
  1. Introduction to UX Design principles (60 minutes)
    • Define User Experience (UX) and its main components
    • Discuss the principles of UX Design, such as usability, accessibility, consistency, and feedback
    • Explain the importance of understanding user needs and goals
    • Introduce the idea of user-centred design and iterative design process
  2. Break (15 minutes)
  3. Overview of Artificial Intelligence, Web3, and their relevance in UX Design (60 minutes)
    • Define Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Web3 (Blockchain, Decentralised Applications, and Cryptocurrencies)
    • Discuss the impact of AI and Web3 on UX Design and the opportunities they create
    • Present examples of AI and Web3 applications in UX Design, such as chatbots, decentralised identity management, and personalised experiences
  4. Introduction to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (30 minutes)
    • Present an overview of the 17 SDGs and their importance for global development
    • Discuss the role of UX Design in addressing and contributing to the SDGs

Afternoon Session – Hands-on Practical Activities

  1. Activity: UX Design Principles in Action (60 minutes)
    • Ask students to analyse an existing digital product (e.g., website, app) in small groups
    • Have them identify strengths and weaknesses in the product based on the UX Design principles discussed earlier
    • Each group presents their findings to the class
  2. Break (15 minutes)
  3. Activity: AI and Web3 in UX Design (60 minutes)
    • In small groups, students brainstorm ideas for incorporating AI or Web3 technology into a digital product to improve its UX
    • Each group pitches their idea to the class, discussing the benefits and potential drawbacks
  4. Activity: UX Design for Sustainable Development (45 minutes)
    • Students work individually or in pairs to identify a specific SDG and brainstorm a digital solution that contributes to its achievement
    • Encourage students to think about how UX Design principles and emerging technologies can be used to create a user-centred and impactful solution
    • Each student or pair presents their idea to the class

Wrap-up and Homework (10 minutes)

  • Recap the key learnings from the day
  • Homework
    • Have students read the provided handouts and toolkit, and encourage them to explore additional resources on their own
    • conduct a small UX audit of 2-3 websites or apps and document their findings in a short report

Desired outcomes

By the end of Week 1, students should have a foundational understanding of UX Design principles and the impact of emerging technologies like AI and Web3 on UX Design. They should also be aware of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and the potential for UX Design to contribute to global development.
