Part 1: Theory (Morning Session)

  1. Introduction (15 minutes):
    • Briefly recap the previous week’s lessons.
    • Introduce the goals and objectives of Week 7.
    • Provide an overview of the day’s schedule.
  2. Setting Up and Conducting Usability Tests (60 minutes):
    • Lecture on the importance of usability testing in the design and development process.
    • Explain the purpose and benefits of conducting usability tests.
    • Introduce various usability testing methods, such as moderated and unmoderated tests, remote and in-person tests, and think-aloud protocol.
    • Discuss best practices for setting up and conducting usability tests, including creating test plans, selecting participants, and preparing test materials.
    • Describe the role of the facilitator and the observer in usability tests.
    • Engage students in a Q&A session to ensure understanding of the concepts.
  3. Break (15 minutes)
  4. Gathering and Analysing Test Results Using AI Tools (60 minutes):
    • Lecture on the advantages of using AI tools for gathering and analysing usability test results.
    • Explain how AI can be used to process large amounts of qualitative and quantitative data, such as transcripts, surveys, and behavioural metrics.
    • Introduce AI-driven analysis tools, such as natural language processing platforms, computer vision tools for analysing visual data, and machine learning algorithms for predictive analysis.
    • Provide examples of usability test analysis using AI tools.
    • Discuss the limitations and ethical considerations of using AI for usability test analysis.
    • Engage students in a Q&A session to ensure understanding of the concepts.
  5. Identifying Areas for Improvement and Iterating on Your Design (45 minutes):
    • Lecture on the importance of identifying areas for improvement and iterating on your design based on usability test findings.
    • Explain how to analyse usability test results to uncover insights and prioritise design changes.
    • Discuss strategies for iterating on your design to address identified issues and enhance the user experience.
    • Engage students in a Q&A session to ensure understanding of the concepts.

Part 2: Hands-On Practical Activities (Afternoon Session)

  1. Usability Testing Activity (60 minutes):
    • Divide students into small groups.
    • Assign each group a specific project or problem to solve, preferably based on the low-fidelity prototypes created in Week 6.
    • Instruct groups to create a usability test plan and prepare test materials for their assigned project.
    • Rotate through the groups, providing guidance and support as needed.
  2. Break (15 minutes)
  3. Conducting Usability Tests (60 minutes):
    • Have groups swap their test materials with another group.
    • Instruct each group to conduct usability tests on the other group’s prototype, with some group members acting as facilitators and observers, and others as test participants.
    • Offer support and guidance to students as they conduct the tests.
  4. Analysing Test Results Using AI Tools Activity (45 minutes):
    • Provide students with access to AI-driven analysis tools introduced in the morning session.
    • Instruct students to use these tools to analyse the usability test data they collected.
    • Offer support and guidance to students as they work with the AI tools.
  5. Wrap-up and Reflection (30 minutes):
    • Invite each group to present their usability test findings and discuss the insights they gained from the AI-driven analysis.
    • Facilitate a class-wide discussion about the day’s activities, highlighting key learnings and insights.
    • Preview the topics and objectives for Week 8.
    • Encourage students to practise the techniques learned during the week and to prepare for the upcoming sessions.
